The model that I have used on the front cover of my magazine was Samantha Turner, she was used as she suited the role of the model that I needed for the magazine, I placed her on an empty wall without any colour to allow me to easily edit out the background and put her onto a custom one, the clothing she wore resemble the outfits that they would have worn during the times the magazine is based on.
The contents page used many different models.
The first model I used was Eloise Barrett, she was dressed in casual clothing and we took the picture in a music room as there was a wall filled with vinyl covers which allowed us to be able to use them in the magazine.
The second model that I used was Thomas Medhurst, which was used to hold the vinyl cover and be able to see it without much else needed, he wasn’t the main focus of the picture so I tried to keep him to the side and instead focused more onto the vinyl.
The third model I used was a teacher, as they are older and match near the age group of the target audience, he is dressed in summer clothing and was used to show different outfits that can be worn in the summer.
Double Page Spread
I used the same model I used on the front page as they seemed to match the style and the artist that was used for the double page was based off the times of the models clothing. This allowed me to be able to work with the picture and she wore different clothing to make the picture seem different.
With the feedback that I had received from my target audience I made the changes to the magazine and now have a lot cleaner looking magazine that would suit the target audience that I have chosen. The writing that is on the picture is clear and easy to read and the writing around the page has been set up together in different areas to allow the model to be the focus of the magazine. The barcode has been moved from the model and has been fitted in next to the title to make it look tidier and the price has been shifted to join that too. I also made sure to go around the image and make more alterations and make the edges smoother to allow it to seem like she actually in front of that background and made sure there was no extra pieces of the picture.
I decided to make edits to the front cover of my magazine and receive feedback from as many people as possible to find out what they think of it. From this I am able to decide that the first version that is shown is the more liked version and so I will work from the feedback given and try and improve my magazine as much as possible
A few things that were said about my magazine from feedback were that
The barcodes positioning being changed
Writing being different colour due to it not being visible
picture smoothed up as there are pieces of image across the screen
Less spacing between the stories to be able to fit more text on
From the questionnaires that I collected, I decided to make the information into a model to show the difference between who likes what kind of magazines. I saw that the number between reading a magazine and not reading a magazine were quite close, which shows the same with Vintage music and Rock music, with both of which being close competitors for the choice of music genre people would want in a magazine. This shows that I could also choose rock music for a magazine genre choice if necessary but the majority of people from the questionnaire said vintage, and so I will stick with that genre.
I decided to do research into other vintage based magazines to see how well they do, and after finding a site for vintage magazines I can see clearly that they are still doing well, with 76 issues out for this style of magazines, each magazine currently sells for £4.50 each and they seem to be doing really well with selling them. This magazine shows a similar following that my magazine shows, with the model being in the direct centre and the majority of writing being on the left side of the magazine, but from this we see the placement of the bar code being on the left side but more vertical than most barcodes are. We see that the tagline is above the title in this magazine instead of below the title like mine is. I decided to add both images next to each other to allow me to compare them to each other and see what they have that is similar and different.
I printed out questionnaires and asked students to fill them in, from these questionnaires I added 3 to this post, these three people are the people who had the most common taste in music magazines but none read magazines. From this we can find information that they all would read a vintage magazine if they were asked, which will match my genre well. I also found that they commonly want more images and more “Eye catching” images in magazines, which would make them want to read it more. One spoke more about adding more information on the artists instead of adding pull quotes and other similar techniques.
From these questionnaires, I can clearly see that it would be best for my magazine to be in the genre that I already had chosen and means that if created people would read the magazine.
For my music magazine, I have decided that I will need the use of makeup, but little to no props. I have got the dress ready that my model will wear for the pictures and there is already makeup ready for the pictures. I will have my model in front of a wall with little to no different colours, as it will be easier to crop out the background and add the model to my custom background instead. I will need to set up the lighting in a way that will not show much shadow onto my model as it will make the picture a lot easier to alter and this would mean that I won’t need to spend as long editing the background and can work on more important parts of the magazine.
Whilst looking at different music magazines for my genre, I noticed a trend in the target audience. This target audience was based around the age of 20-25. I could see this through the use of the different styles of language used and the models that are shown on the magazines. The magazines that I used are both not music magazines as there are no available vintage music magazines to find and instead I used older versions of the Vogue magazine and also used Vintage Life Magazines for my research.
Vogue uses formal language throughout the magazine and gives a read that would be used in the free time of the user. This could be read on the way to work or to relax after work and gives the idea of this and so is based around that age group. The magazine also uses models in the age group of the target audience and makes the model look both serious and formal. The magazine will allow me to use ideas and be able to know how to attract people from the age group that I have and so let me make my magazine as great as I can.
Vintage Life Magazine uses models from the same age group, just as Vogue does and goes for how to look good in outfits, in which this age group would aim for.
Both the magazine models are looking away from the screen as to show they are looking at something interesting, instead of inviting the reader in like magazines for younger age groups would do.
The magazine could also be bought by people from the age group of 30-35, as the language also suits the age group but some of the stories included may not be based around their age, this audience area wouldn’t be the area we focused on mostly and instead will be based on the 20-25 region.
After thinking of a music magazine title I could give, I finally decided between two names, On Vinyl and Turning the Table. Between these two names I felt like Turning the Table was too long of a name, and so decided that On Vinyl could be a better name to use. I decided to ask those around me as to what they thought of the names and I got the same responses between them and chose On Vinyl out of the two names. Because of this, I have decided to call my magazine On Vinyl, as it gives a more vintage feel to the name and is more catchy than Turning the Table.
I have begun thinking about adding a title to the picture, and have decided to go with the Broadway font, as Paris could cause issues with adding the text with Photoshop or InDesign as I would need to download the fonts then import them in. I also felt like the model in the picture should be more to the right and so I decided to quickly move them across as it would help with more of a story to the picture. I will have them moved to the right and looking more left as it will make the reader think as though they have something to look at and will attract the reader. I will edit the picture and post the new version of it later on.
I have been working on the magazine and have added colour to make the magazine seem more it’s type, I have a beige background as it is a colour I saw a lot whilst researching on magazines and I have added a navy blue dress with short sleeves as I did research on the fashion in the 1940’s/50’s and found that swing dresses were a common dress to be worn to match the music style. To make the background more presentable I have coloured out the majority of text, in which when I next improve my magazine front I will add fine liner to and add the information back, to edit the picture I have been using Photoshop and have cropped the bottom part off as my design didn’t fit the space and so I have used a shorter space which will be filled with information.
For the Title I will use the font Broadway or another font that I have found online called CF Paris .
I’ve thought of adding Cover lines to the side of the magazine, but without boxes and so the text would be a dark colour or white to be seen clearly on the beige colour, I decided to test which colour was more visible and asked my peers around me to tell me which of the two is more visible with the lines, and they both said black was more visible, but when I checked the magazines online, such as the Mademoiselle magazine, they seem to use white text with their cover lines title on the screen with a black writing on screen, which I could use as white text will bring the reader in to read and the black text will be the more important information.
Whilst I drew the picture, I tried to stick to the rule of thirds, and I kept everything as it should, I have cover lines on the left part of the magazine, I have the title in the top part of the magazine and I will have issue number and date in the bottom left of the magazine, I believe I could add more information to the right hand side of the magazine, but this could make the magazine look cramped and not as appealing as it could be.
I decided to base my magazine style off of the magazines made by Mademoiselle, the style they use suits the same style that my magazine is based off, which is the vintage area of 1940’s/1950’s. The style they use is normally a medium shot but can become a medium long shot or a long shot. the background colour is normally a plain one colour background which would mean I could use a green screen and simply change the colour or find a wall or sheet that has the colour that I want, the colour will most likely be a beige colour or a colour that isn’t too bright as it wouldn’t suit the style of the magazines. I’ve attached an example of a magazine made by mademoiselle to show the idea I am talking about, and I have also added my own idea of what my magazine is going to look like.
I’ve decided to search more into the music style that I am doing, which will be based on the music during the war times, such as the Andrew Sisters, this kind of music isn’t really shown in many magazines anymore and so I thought it would be a good idea to do this kind of music for my own magazine instead of all the common music to this day which is more than likely pop or rock. I hope you enjoy the music!
